Many of you are probably familiar with Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Nearly all the direct ministry thatBonhoeffer did was with children or youth. We recently completed a five-week book study on Life Together, and wanted to share some of the lessons we learned together with you. It gives practical advice on how life together in Christ can be sustained in families and groups. This story of a unique fellowship in an underground SEMInary during the Nazi years reads like one of Pauls letters. These two seemingly disconnected parts of pastoral life come together in the factthat Bonhoeffer himself was a youth worker. Now in Life Together we have Pastor Bonhoeffers experience of Christian community.
My favourite theologians are those who also pastor and this book is an example of why: he offers truth in ways that take fully into account the realities of church life. Bonhoeffer is just the kind of engaged,intellectual, and action-oriented Christian that pastors admire. There’s so much meat in here from Bonhoeffer. This short book (just over three hours, about one per chapter) was so good, I was considering buying the text before the end of the first chapter so I could absorb it more slowly. I need the text version! (And that’s my highest compliment!)
